Who doesn't like to scoop both hands into the earth I personally tend, lift it up to my face, and inhale its fragrance? Rich, fertile soil smells of the earth, teeming with health and life; with beneficial microbes, bacteria, earthworms, and hummus. Organically rich soil is heady, almost magical.
Fertile soil is everything.
India moved away from that fact when soil began to become little more than a planting medium, with fertility entrusted to petroleum-based chemicals, and pest control insecticides. But we're coming back now; back to earth as it were. In fact, we're coming back with something of a vengeance.
More Antioxidants
Fruits and vegetables grown organically contain higher levels of cancer-fighting antioxidants than conventional food, and the difference is enough to have a "significant impact on health and nutrition," according to a recent study published in the journal of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. The levels were 58.5 percent higher in corn, 50 percent higher in marionberries (a type of blackberry), and 19 percent higher in strawberries
The antioxidant compounds are produced by plants in response to stress, such as that produced by insect pests or competing weeds. The need for these natural safeguards decreases with the use of herbicides and pesticides in conventional agriculture. "by synthetically protecting the produce from these pests, we decrease their need to produce antioxidants,"
Earth Friendliness
In the Organic Trade Association's list of the 10 best reasons to go organic, more than half have to do with the environment-with cleaner water supplies, more fertile soil, more sustainable farm practices, and greater respect for a balanced ecosystem.
Organic-growing methods also tend to be friendlier to wildlife, birds, amphibians, earthworms, bees, and other beneficial insects, in part by eliminating reliance on chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fertilizers. These often not only eliminate organisms but degrade or eliminate their habitat.
Organic farming may also have a significant impact on slowing global warming, in that soils rich in organic matter absorb and retain significant amounts of carbon,
The organic farm had 15 to 28 percent more carbon, which was the equivalent of taking about 3500 pounds of carbon dioxide per hectare out of the air.
Another reason for growing organically is profitability. Organic growers not only eliminate the cost of fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides, but can produce yields at least comparable to conventional (chemical) methods, and often greater while selling their products at higher prices.
"We were using chemicals I don't even want to tell you about, and it seemed like we needed more every year. The cost was killing me," says Shyam, a local farmer in Delhi, who switched from conventional to organic methods few years ago. Shyam now uses cover crops, compost, crop rotation, and some organic fertilizer like vermicompost or Wonder worm manure, to feed the soil on his farm, He also uses bio pest managers like Super bio wash plus, Neemastra, etc to get rid of pests and have more fruitful production. The land is more productive than ever, he says.
